Visa Options

Generally there are 2 types of visas that you can obtain to complete your internship; A Non-Immigrant B or a Non-Immigrant ED

Non Immigrant "ED"

In the event the Host Company does not pay any stipends then this visa will be the most appropriate one for completing your internship. This visa will allow you to stay in Thailand for the period of the internship and you will need to report to the immigration department every 90 days to confirm your place of internship and residence and also to verify that you are still completing your internship. Basically this means you can stay in Thailand for the internship duration (maximum one full year) without leaving Thailand (commonly referred to as 'Visa Runs').

This visa is normally issued with a 'single entry' stamp. This means that if you plan to travel outside Thailand whilst completing your internship then you will be required to get a 're-entry' stamp every time you leave the country, These are very easy to obtain and normally cost approx. 1000 baht. However if you plan to travel frequently during your internship you may want to consider applying for a 'multiple entry' visa at the time of initial application at your local embassy/consulate. Please check with your local embassy/consulate for exact fees of a multiple entry stamp.

Non Immigrant "B"

If you will be receiving stipends/salary from your host company you will need to apply for a non-immigrant "B" visa.

This visa is either issued for 1 year or initially 3 months (then renewed for up to a year) depending on the embassy/consulate. Once the visa is granted the host company will then apply for a work permit for you (once in Thailand).

Depending on the conditions of the visa (this will depend on the size of your host company as well as the length of your internship) you will either need to exit and re-enter Thailand every 90 days (commonly referred to as a 'visa-run') or report to the Immigration department every 90 days. A visa run is normally done in one day to one of the neighbouring countries and the procedure is straight forward without any real complications

Again you may choose to apply for a 'multiple entry' or re-entry stamp when applying for the visa if you wish to travel outside Thailand during your internship.

VISA FAQ

1. Can I stay in Thailand after internship on this visa?
Yes you can. The most suitable visa to apply for after your internship will depend on the exact purpose of your stay. INTERNSHIPS THAILAND can advise you on the best possible option

2. Can I get another job on my visa?
You can not be employed by any employer if you're on a Non Imm ED visa. If you have a non-Imm B visa then you may have more than one job. Your main employer (the internship host company) will have to consent to you getting another job and your secondary employer will also need to meet strict conditions and minimum wages when applying for your work permit. Please also remember that your main priority will be to fulfil the obligations of your internship host company

3. Can I come before the start of the internship and travel on the same visa?
You may be able to. This will depend on your internship company allowing this and when your internship intended start date is.

4. Can the visa be refused?
Visas are not normally refused if you meet the visa criteria. Refusals are primarily and largely due to the intern not meeting background and character checks (example: having a criminal record)

5. How much is the visa?
Prices may vary from one embassy/consulate to another, Generally however a Non-Imm visa (both types) will cost approximately (or equivalent to) 5,000-10,000 baht

6. What if I leave my internship early?
The Host Company will issue a letter declaring the intern is no longer participating in the internship programme and this will effectively lead to the cancellation of the visa.
